Support to Orphans and other vulnerable children

In line with Christ’s mission on earth (Jn 10:10) “I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly”. The Ugandan constitution of 1995 Article 17 (1c) as well advocates for the protection of vulnerable children and persons against any form of abuse, harassment or ill-treatment. Caritas targets children who are below the age of 18 and have lost one or both parents, children with chronically ill parents, children who are malnourished due to extreme poverty, living with a disability, affected by armed conflicts, abused by parents or their care givers, HIV-positive, those marginalized, stigmatized, or even discriminated against and finally, the children the community recommends as needy for any other reason.

The 2014 population census data show that half of the Ugandan population of 34.9 million consists of children under the age of 15, while 17.1 million children (more than 56%) are younger than the age of 18, in need of support in terms of basic necessities such as health, education and other social services.

Caritas engages TASO Rukungiri through their Music dance and drama in HIV sensitization to reduce stigma and discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDs, voluntary counseling and testing and free medical services. Caritas works with children orphaned by HIV/AIDS and their families to strengthen their ability to cope and thrive.
